The first missionaries from the LDS Church to Mexico were called during the late summer and early fall of 1875, shortly after Daniel W. Jones and Meliton Gonzalez Trejo had begun to translate portions of the Book of Mormon into Spanish. Plot twist: he was called to an English-speaking mission. Their experience was a lot different out there. The geographical area a mission actually covers is often much larger than the name may indicate; most areas of the world are within the jurisdiction of a mission of the church. These young men and women will head out to their assigned areas of service after only nine weeks of studya small time frame, NPR notes, compared with the U.S. militarys 64-week course in Mandarin taught at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California.
